# Inbox Notifications

The Inbox is your central hub for staying up to date with what's happening across your workspace. When someone mentions you, assigns a task, or changes a status, you'll see it here.

## How Notifications Work

Notifications are created automatically when events happen in your workspace:

| Event | You'll See |
| --------------------------------------------------- | ---------------------------------------- |
| Someone mentions you with `$your-name` in a comment | "You were mentioned in: {task title}" |
| Someone comments on a task you're assigned to | "New comment on: {task title}" |
| Someone assigns a task to you | "You were assigned to: {task title}" |
| Someone changes the status of your task | "Status changed: {task title}" |
| Your task is marked as done by someone else | "Task completed: {task title}" |
| You're mentioned in a project update | "You were mentioned in a project update" |
| A task you own is due within 24 hours | "Due soon: {task title}" |
| You're added to a project | "You were added to project: {name}" |

## The $mention System

To mention a team member in a comment, type `$` followed by their name:

1. Type `$` in the comment box
2. A dropdown appears showing all team members
3. Select the person from the suggestions.
4. Submit the comment. Task comments send a mention notification when the API receives the selected member ID; notification delivery was not tested in this documentation walkthrough.

> **Note:** `$` opens the person picker in task comments. `@` is used for agent commands on that surface. Team chat does not currently expose the same person picker; see [Team Chat](/docs/chat/team-chat).

## Self-notifications

You won't receive notifications for your own actions. If you assign a task to yourself or comment on your own task, no notification is created.

## Real-time Delivery

Notifications appear instantly via Server-Sent Events (SSE). When the Inbox page is open, new notifications show up without refreshing. Your browser may also show a desktop notification if you've granted permission.

## Email Notifications

When email is enabled in your notification preferences, you'll also receive a branded email for each notification. Emails include the notification title, a message preview, and a "View in Inbox" button that takes you directly to the notification.
